Suitcase
The light through the blinds
is speaking another language.
When I open them, it's evening
with its pewter face,
eyes asquint.
These identical rooftops are the night's tarmac.
When it touches down
the heavy luggage of the day
will be spinning on the turnstile
of a neighborhood street corner
waiting to be picked up.
I find mine, and when I open it on the bed,
an autumn gust blows out.

With hair of ripened wheat,
The fields are astonished
At those eyes of blue
That hold Aegean isles in place,
The template men still trace.

Wherever you wander
tales sprout out of your sandals’ wake
and over the planet’s long-dead bones
the rag of your shouldering heart
still clothes us well

that immortality
